Giancarlo Schiaffini

Trombone

Schiaffini, born in Rome in 1942, studied music and composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, Vinko Globokar and electronic music with Franco Evangelisti. He lives in Rome.
He plays trombone and tuba, composes and interprets contemporary music and improvises. Schiaffini is one of the pioneers of free jazz, he has worked with John Cage, Karole Armitage, Luigi Nono, Giacinto Scelsi and others and is co-founder of the chamber ensemble Nuove Forme Sonore and the Italian Instabile Orchestra. He performs worldwide, has an extensive discography and several publications on trombone techniques and improvisation.
